Most MGB's that have not had a restoration at some time in their life will now soon require one!

There are many books published on the purchase of classic cars generally and the MGB in particular. All I can say is that if the car requires mild restoration presume the worst. It will probably require major structural work and in the worst case scenario a new shell. Many jobs can be carried out by competant amatuers but structural work is best left to a recognised specialist. As far as cost is concerned again presume the worst and add at least 20% and you may stay in budget!! Anyway that's the downside out the way just think of the finished article and the years of pleasure you will have from driving a great British sports car as apposed to a souless modern day peanut shaped box with about as much character as an ash tray full of dog ends.

So you have spent your pennies and if you want to restore it to as it left the Factory then you will need to know it's original specification. Bear in mind that over thirty odd years and a myriad of owners things become changed- wire wheels are added, axles are changed, overdrives are fitted and engines particulary three bearing crankers are changed with monotomous regularity. I know only too well as my daughter used to drive one!!!!!!

How to find the original specification ? ....answer is, The British Motor Heritage Trust.
They offer two services the primary being The Heritage Certificate as shown for our car.
As you see it is definitive in the specification but also determines the build date and for our British customers is accepted by D.V.L.A.
If the car is built before January 1st 1973 it is tax exempt even if first registered after that date. It may save you GBP165.00 a year and the cetificate cost a one off fee of GBP25.00.
The other option for GBP10.00 is the build date certificate again this is accepted by the DVLA.

Ok, so you know the original spec what next? Well if it is safe, use and enjoy it. This also allows you to discover any mechanical or electrical problems before restoration begins. Then take loads of photos at every angle. They will prove to be invaluble when you put the jigsaw back together.

I do not intend to dwell on health and safety issues suffice it to say that many needless injuries occur where motor cars are concerned. The rebuild wont be cheap so buy the best tools you can afford dont scrimp. Poor fitting spanners cause at least skinned knuckles a faulty jack can cause death! Accidents dont just happen they are caused. I once, because of sheer idleness put a drill through my thigh, the local accident and emergency department thought it was hilarious but strangely I wasn't laughing.
